Introduction to the Sport of Rugby

Because it is an exciting game, many people at present increasingly love the game. Rugby combines football and soccer in that it is a hard-hitting physical game like football, and a game of speed and movement, like soccer.

The ball used in rugby are almost the same as a football in terms of size and shape. Rugby balls are slightly larger than a football. The modern version of the rugby balls have no laces. Rugby players’ personal equipment includes a mouthpiece which is mandatory, and a soft-padded head gear which is optional.

The playing field for a rugby game is called the pitch. The measurement of this large grassy surface is 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. There are uprights positioned on every end of the rugby field. The goal area is behind the uprights. The goals area is 10 meters deep at minimum and the depth is often 22 meters.

Rugby is played by two teams which will be represented on the pitch. There are fifteen players in all for each team. Each team is divided into two separate groupings called the pack and the backs. The jersey number of pack players are from one to eight. The large, physical players of the team are placed in the pack group. The jersey’s with numbers from nine to fifteen constitute the backs which is made up of the fastest team players.

Scoring a goal known as ‘try’ is the main objective of this game. You can achieve a try by touching the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone. There is no particular player that can carry the ball to the zone to make a score. When a player makes a try, it is equivalent to 5 points. When a player makes a try, he is then awarded a conversion kick. IF he is successful with his kick, 2 more points are added to the score.

Another way of scoring is through a drop goal. A drop goal is equivalent to 3 points. The drop goal is made by kicking the ball through the upright of your opponent. To make a drop goal the ball should make contact with the ground first before you kick it.

Penalty kicks are also granted on player fouls. Your team is given 3 points if you make good on your penalty kick. A penalty kick is taken where the foul was committed behind the 22 meter line.

Professional levels of rugby are already existing at present. In some countries, cities have teams, which is also the same with pro football teams in different states. Most popular among the rugby games are those played internationally. International teams are made up of the best players in the city teams in different countries. Today, international rugby games are getting more popular.
